The inner circle of the 2nd Street and Mulberry Avenue Roundabout continued to take shape this past week with the addition of red concrete inside the inner circle driving lane. Heuer Construction, Inc., the prime contractor, is continuing work on the medians, sidewalks, and driveways. Handscape Solutions, Inc., is expected to begin brickwork for the crosswalks and sidewalk areas next week, weather permitting.
Work in the East 3rd Street and Mulberry Avenue intersection has also been mostly completed with the intersection reopened to traffic. Some lane restrictions may occur as the contractor complete sidewalk work in that area.
The contractor is anticipating wrapping up work on the roundabout by July 11 depending on the weather and other unforeseen circumstances.
Mulberry Avenue is currently closed from the #1 Alley to 3rd Street and 2nd Street is closed from Mulberry Avenue to Orange Street. Eastbound traffic on Mississippi Drive is detoured at Iowa Avenue to 5th Street to Park Avenue. The detour will remain in effect until the project is completed.
CONSTRUCTION DETOUR - Truck traffic heading east on Mississippi Drive will be detoured onto Iowa Avenue, to 5th Street, and down to Oak between returning to 2nd Street. The reverse will be in effect for truck traffic heading west (2nd Street to Oak to 5th Street to Iowa to Mississippi Drive). To ensure the safety of construction workers and the public, drivers are urged to find alternate routes when possible, use caution when traveling in or around the construction area, and pay attention to traffic control signs.
Heuer Construction was awarded the $2.114,738 contract for the Mulberry Avenue and East 2nd Street Roundabout Project by the Muscatine City Council at the April 15, 2019, meeting. The construction primarily consists of pavement removal, excavation, concrete paving, sub-drains, granular sub-base, underground utility improvements, concrete pavers, and streetscape amenities.
