West Side Trail

PROJECT UPDATE:  JULY 24, 2020

061720 West Side Trail South Houser section (JPG)Heuer Construction has completed concrete work for the West Side Trail project from Hershey Avenue to Crossroads, Inc., with only a section running through the Arbor Commons development yet to be completed. The contractor has opened the completed trail from Hershey to Crossroads, Inc., to public use.

The section through the Arbor Commons subdivision will be finished once pavement work in that development has been completed.

THE PROJECT

The $1.221,380.28 contract for the West Side Trail Project was awarded to Heuer Construction of Muscatine, Iowa., by the Muscatine City Council on September 5, 2019. The project will construct 1.26 miles of graded and paved pedestrian and bike trail.

The West Side Trail, one of the four projects contained in the CAT Pearls of Progress grant, will connect the trail head on South Houser Street with the trail system inside Discovery Park. The West Side Trail will be the fourth trail to meet at the South Houser Street trail head. The others include the Musser Park to Kent Stein Park Trail, Kent Stein Park to Deep Lakes Park Trail, and the Muscatine Pollinator Park Trail.

A study was performed by Steve Ford LA-Martin Whitacre to provide options for the trail route that will minimize the property acquisition needed for the trial, minimize the work needed to get the NEPA clearances so that the project can be done under a categorical exclusion, and allow for public input into the route planning process. The study was completed in the spring of 2018.
