[ARCHIVED] Fall landscaping made easy with free compost from the City

MUSCATINE, Iowa – The City of Muscatine is offering residents free, high-quality compost, perfect for fall landscaping projects and preparing gardens and lawns for the winter months. Compost is available at the Muscatine Transfer Station Compost Facility, located at 1000 S. Houser St., can be used to enrich soil and improve plant health.

Compost and Mulch Access

Compost is available on a first-come, first-served basis, and residents should bring their own containers and tools for loading. 

Staff is available to assist in the loading of compost and mulch from 12-3:00 p.m. on weekdays. Residents may load compost or mulch themselves on weekends when staff will not be available.

The Compost Facility is open 12-6 p.m. Sunday through Friday and from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturdays. Please note that the Compost Facility will close at 5 p.m. each day starting on November 2. 

Staff-Assisted Loading & Deliveries

 

Residents needing staff to load trucks or trailers should call in advance at (563) 263-9689. A fee applies for this service.

Wood mulch delivery is available for Muscatine and Fruitland residents on their trash collection day. A full one-ton truck load would cost $25. Deliveries need to be scheduled by calling the Transfer Station. 

Firewood available for the cutting

Residents may cut firewood at the facility. A waiver must be signed at the Transfer Station office prior to taking firewood.

Bring your yard waste to the facility

Residents can bring grass clippings, leaves, plants, brush and branches (under 10 inches in diameter and 10 feet in length) from their property to the Compost Facility. Larger trees and logs are accepted, but tree stumps and roots are not.

Safety Reminder

All loads must be securely transported to prevent debris from falling onto city streets, which can create traffic hazards or damage vehicles.
