[ARCHIVED] As the weather turns, Spring Cleanup Week arrives

Spring Cleanup 2018b

MUSCATINE, Iowa – Winter seems to have finally let his grasp slip into just a memory and the warmer weather arrives just in time for the 2018 City of Muscatine Spring Cleanup Week that will be conducted April 23-27. The week offers residents of Muscatine and Fruitland the opportunity to dispose of bulky items at no charge with collection on the same day as the residents’ garbage collection.

The Department of Public Works will collect the unwanted items and take them to the Muscatine Recycling Center & Transfer Station for disposal. Residents may place all bulky, unwanted items out the night before their regular garbage day or by 5:00 a.m. on pick up day. Businesses are not eligible for this service.

“Please refrain from putting these items out early,” Kristy Korpi, Solid Waste Manager for the City of Muscatine, said.

Among the items accepted for residential curbside pickup are building materials not to exceed a pick up load measuring 8’x4’x2’, dismantled swing sets, up to four (4) appliances excluding camper refrigerators and camper air conditioning units, furniture and household items, gas tanks, and miscellaneous items. Standard refrigerators and freezers need to have the doors removed for safety.

Yard waste must be in City of Muscatine yard waste bags. Brush tied in bundles no larger than 18 inches in diameter and four feet in length will also be picked up.

Items that will not be accepted for curbside pickup include car bodies, large trees or stumps, and excessive amounts of concrete and building materials. Tires and electronic waste will also not be picked up curbside but may be taken by the resident to the Transfer Station at no cost during Spring Cleanup Week.

Residents of Muscatine and Fruitland can take up to eight (8) car and/or light truck tires, and up to five (5) electronic waste items including TVs, computers, or items with circuit boards, to the Transfer Station at NO CHARGE during Spring Cleanup Week. Proof of residency (driver’s license, photo ID, or piece of mail with name and address on it) is required. Tires and electronic waste are accepted at the Transfer Station all other weeks for a fee.

Many items are accepted at the Transfer Station year round at no charge. These include batteries, hazardous chemicals, household cleaners, medical sharps in a container, motor oil, paint, and propane tanks.

The Recycling Center and Transfer Station is open 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
