[ARCHIVED] City to reopen Compost Facility one final day

2025 Compost Facility Open On December 13 (JPG)

MUSCATINE, Iowa – Despite the winter weather and lingering snow, the City of Muscatine will reopen the Compost Facility for one final day before the winter break.

“To give residents one last chance to dispose of leaves and other yard waste this season, the Compost Facility will be open this Saturday, December 13, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.,” said David Popp, Solid Waste Manager. “This will be the last day the site is open until spring.”

The facility has been closed since December 6 due to recent snowstorms, but the Muscatine Transfer Station has received calls from residents asking when it would reopen.

“It seems many residents still have leaves they want to get rid of before winter fully sets in,” Popp said.

Curbside Yard Waste Collection Continues

Even with the Compost Facility’s temporary closure, curbside yard waste collection will continue on residents’ normal trash collection days. Residents can place bagged yard waste or bundled brush at the curb for pickup.

Guidelines for Curbside Yard Waste Collection:

  • Only grass clippings, leaves, and garden waste will be collected.
  • Yard waste must be in 20- or 30-gallon paper bags with a City yard waste sticker.
  • Bags should not exceed 50 lbs and should be kept dry.
  • Stickers are for residential yard waste only.
  • Place bags at the curb after 5 p.m. the day before collection but before 5 a.m. on collection day.
  • City of Muscatine Yard Waste Stickers are available at:
    1. Muscatine Transfer Station
    2. City Hall
    3. Public Works
    4. Hy-Vee (both locations)
    5. Fareway

Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the final Compost Facility day or use the curbside collection service to manage yard waste before winter fully arrives.
