  1. Not So Ordinary: Iowa Regionalists and Scenes of Rural Life

    March 9, 2017, 10:00 AM - July 30, 2017, 5:00 PM @ Muscatine Art Center Stanley Gallery

Iowa prairie is fertile ground for both farmers and artists. As a world-famous artist and the son of a farmer, Grant Wood captured the everyday beauty of Iowa’s land and people. Not So Ordinary is an exhibition featuring the Muscatine Art Center’s remarkable Iowa Regionalist collection. Visitors to the exhibition can compare paintings and prints by Grant Wood to works by Marvin Cone, John Bloom, Alma Held, Arnold Pyle, Juanita Jamison, Harold Allison, and others, such as Muscatine’s own, William Bunn. Some of these artists are connected to Grant Wood through the Stone City Art Colony, while others overlapped at the University of Iowa’s School of Art. Some completed Public Works of Art Project (PWAP) murals under the supervision of Grant Wood, while others also exhibited in the Iowa Art Salon in the 1930s.

  2. Paths of Pissarro with Carol Ehlers

    May 25, 2017, 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM @ Muscatine Art Center Music Room

This spring, the Muscatine Art Center welcomes back Carol Ehlers, art history speaker, to present a two part program on the life of artist Camille Pissarro. The “Paths of Camille Pissarro” program will explore how the artist’s work changed during his lifetime. Admission is free and open to the public. Thursday, May 25, 2017 Paths of Camille Pissarro: Crossroads in an Artistic Career In the mid-1880s, Pissarro settled in Eragny, a suburb of Paris, where he became interested in the scientific theories of George Seurat and Paul Signac. The second program in this two-part series follows Pissarro as he moves from Seurat’s Pointillism to rural landscapes and finally to city scenes. A known anarchist, Pissarro used his artwork to express his political views. Pissarro’s public protest of the Dreyfus Affair, his views on urbanization, and his personal health struggles are among the topics covered in the program.
