Many of Rockwell’s depictions of the holidays are inspired by the work of Charles Dickens, which he read as a child with his family. In addition to Christmas covers for The Saturday Evening Post and other periodicals of the day, family gatherings were forever frozen in time in the artist’s many advertisements and Hallmark greeting cards. Norman Rockwell’s Spirit of the Holidays shows how the artist’s paintings and drawings inspired feelings of warmth and good cheer for generations to come. Both floors of the Stanley Gallery will be filled with Rockwell's memorable images reflecting the spirit of the season.

Retired computer entrepreneur, Peter Norton (Norton Antivirus) is a contemporary art collector as well as an active participant in various civic and philanthropic activities. In 1988 the Norton Family began commissioning artist to create original, multiple edition works that are mailed as holiday greetings to his personal friends, colleagues and selected institutions. Created by artists represented in the Norton's own collection, these art objects were intended to foster engagement with the world of contemporary art. The Muscatine Art Center has been fortunate to receive these greetings on a yearly basis since 1993.
This year the Muscatine Art Center has revisited holidays past so visitors may also experience the delightful, and often quirky, works of art gifted through the "Norton Family Christmas Project."

The annual Candy Cane Hunt, sponsored by the Muscatine Parks and Recreation Department, is set for 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 1, in Riverside Park. Areas will be set up in the green space near the basketball courts for two age groups including pre-kindergarten through first grader and second through fourth grade girls and boys.
There will be a limit of seven candy canes per person with “special” candy canes sprinkled around that can be redeemed at Pearl City Station for a special toy. Cookies and drinks will be available at Pearl City Station after the hunt.
The Candy Cane Hunt will be held in the dark, so bring a flashlight if you can. LED flashlights will be available from our sponsors if you do not have one.
