IISC Student Projects
The Iowa Initiative for Sustainable Communities (IISC) is a campus-wide effort at the University of Iowa to enhance the capaCity of Iowa's communities to be more sustainable. Partnering with Iowa's urban and rural communities, the IISC identifies projects that address the economic, environmental, and socio-cultural issues they face to build a more sustainable community. The IISC provides significant outreach to Iowa's communities, while transforming teaching and learning at the University of Iowa. The IISC matches community needs with the expertise and resources of the University of Iowa faculty and students, and continuously adds new faculty and courses to the initiative.
The concept of "sustainability" means current generations meet social, economic and environmental needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet those same needs. The IISC approaches sustainability from a holistic perspective, involving many disciplines across campus including, but not limited to, urban and regional planning, public health, engineering, business, geoscience, art and art history, journalism and mass community, and education.
The IISC was founded in 2009 in the School of Urban and Regional Planning by Dr. Chuck Connerly. Since 2009, the IISC has worked with small and medium-sized communities in Iowa to advance sustainability across the state. Community partners include Anamosa, Burlington, Charles city, Columbus Junction, Decorah, Oskaloosa, Wellman, and most recently, Dubuque. Due to the success of these projects and the recognition that sustainability in Iowa spans a variety of disciplines, the IISC expanded to become a campus-wide initiative in the Fall of 2012.
